A community project that can be enjoyed by the community for years to come.

When it became apparent that our Milton Centennial pool was approaching the end of its life and the library/service centre had seismic issues, the Clutha District Council undertook a community consultation. The options on the table were: Should we fix the pool? Build a new pool and library? Or combine the two?

The third option was chosen and a committee was formed. The Bruce Community Facilities Trust was established to further engage with our community and to spearhead fundraising a community contribution for the pool.

The Pool Committee and council worked together to ensure the Facility would meet the needs of the community. We circulated questionnaires, visited with groups and held many conversations which captured the aspirations and gathered feedback on the design from

 the schools, businesses, stakeholders and community.

The council and committee then visited, contacted, studied and photographed other pools across the South Island, asking questions and gathering information. A design of the  main pool, learners and toddlers’ pools, changing rooms, and the space around the facility was drafted. We listened to all the ideas both modest and grand and passed these on to the designers.

Calder Stewart provided us with several designs which we studied, debated and tweaked. They worked most patiently to include as many of the communities wishes as possible. Council also have listened, adapted and accommodated the committee in their pursuit of achieving the best facility possible with the resources available.

It is now up to us as a community to raise our portion of the funding. We have committed to contributing $2 million to building a pool as part of the new facility. Fundraising is well under way and has been wonderfully supported by our area.
